Letter From Birmingham Jail Essays - Gangs In The United States

Letter From Birmingham Jail Martin Luther King Jr.'s essay, A Letter From Birmingham Jail has become a classic for good reason. Martin Luther King was an excellent writer and speaker, appealing not only to the logical side of most people, but also to their emotional side. He was an intelligent man, keeping up with all the current events of not only the nation but the world, and was well read in issues of the past. What he said and wrote came from deep inside him and was influenced by his belief in God and Jesus Christ. His essay took his knowledge and his talents of persuasion, and summed up what he was working for and what he believed in. When he stated, "Anyone who lives inside the U.S. can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds..." he was saying that Americans are people made up of many cultures and backgrounds. He was celebrating America's diversity, which makes the United States such a wonderful place to live. He would be ashamed and sorrowful if he saw how citizens of The United States treated each other today. If we had to take a million immigrants in, say, Zulus, next year, or Englishmen, and put them in Virginia, what group would be easier to assimilate? Patrick Buchanan is outspoken on many subjects, immigration is one of them. Buchanan believes that there should be a 200 mile fence built along the U.S. Mexican border, and that Congress should pass a five-year moratorium on legal immigration. He also feels that an Executive Order should be signed which would abolish federally mandated minority programs and affirmative-action plans, plans that were put in place during the Civil Rights Movement which King helped to lead. Buchanan is the same man who stated that women were "simply not endowed by nature with the same measures of single-minded ambition and the will to succeed." Yet, if he becomes President he will re-instate prayer and Bible study classes because he believes that family values and morals are non-existent in American society today. Is this guy for real? What happened to equality? How can someone be religious and still go around declaring that some people are better then others? Supposedly our country was to have gotten rid of all its racists notions during the 60's and the 70's. Apparently not. Buchanan is creating outsiders within the U.S. Measure 9 and Measure 13, measures, had they been passed, would have caused discrimination on a public scale, legal in Oregon. It would have isolated gays and lesbians as freakish groups who live their lives differently then the main stream, and therefore should be punished for their uniqueness. The founders of these measures, Lon Maybon and the Oregon Citizens Alliance, are so determined to pass such a measure that they are thinking of putting a third measure on the ballot next November. The OCA believes that they have the right to declare homosexuals as dirty people because it says so in the Bible. That, because they have intercourse with members of their own sex, homosexuals should not be allowed to adopt children, or to become legally married. That God has damned them for eternity and that they should be treated accordingly. The OCA is creating outsiders within the U.S. The Crips and the Bloods are two widely known gangs in America. They are centered in the Los Angeles area, but they have groups all across the United States in nearly every city. The Crips and the Bloods are only two of hundreds of growing gangs that are surfacing nation wide. The gangs are prominently located in the inner-cities, the poorer areas of large cities. The gangs play on the idea that they are a family. If anyone attacks my brother, then I'm here to fight back for him. Occasionally, they kill an innocent bystander or two. The kids (Kids they are. Gangs have been known to recruit children between the ages of 10 and 13.) that become members commonly have problems at home, abuse or neglect are prevalent. They feel that the only place left to turn is to the streets, and to the brotherhood of the gangs. Gangs are commonly associated with drugs and violence, for good reason. They attack each other for violation of territory and for interference in each others business, causing a vicious circle of revenge. The result of this violence is fear and anger felt by their victims and neighborhoods. It also leads to a separation between the inner-cities and the suburbs, and stereotyping of whites

Essay Writing Topics Essays

Essay Writing Topics EssaysWriting a college topics essay is more difficult than writing one that has to do with a current term. Some of the reasons for this include the fact that you will have less time and fewer options, but that is not the only reason. The first thing you need to do is to find out what topic is currently being discussed in the classroom. Of course this may not be the most convenient way to do this, as it can involve a visit to the teacher's office. The next step is to write the topic from the viewpoint of your teachers, or more precisely from that of students that are in your class. Ask them for their opinions and thoughts about the topic and make a list of the major points that they mention, as well as any alternative points they might offer.Another approach is to take a look at what students are doing in class and try to come up with your own opinions on the subject. After all, as you will find, it is not uncommon for people to have completely different opinions a bout the same topic than you did.You should also keep in mind that as you are writing the new subject you will be writing more on a hands-on basis than you did when you were writing a current term essay. Also, you should make sure that you try to not only express the original opinion, but that you also highlight points that are contradictory to that opinion. This can make the essay seem much more attractive. You should keep in mind that essay writing is actually a skill and will improve as you continue to practice it. However, you will find that it takes time to perfect the skill. If you are looking for information on how to change and/or express your opinions, you will find that there are many resources available to you. Many of these books will teach you the skills needed to use effectiveessay writing. In addition, you will find that essay writing can be quite simple if you choose the right exercises and techniques. It is important to remember that your essay is not the end of the pr ocess, as you will want to make sure that you properly evaluate your essay before submitting it.

Stomp The Yard Review Professor Ramos Blog

Stomp The Yard Review Stomp the Yard is by far one of the best captivating and entertaining movies I have ever watched. If there is a movie which I can vote for completely, then it is the movie stomp the yard. This movie is about an inner city krump dancer, DJ, who moves to Atlanta, Georgia for a fresh start. In the movie, DJ’s role is arrogant, over-confident, and determine to win the heart of April Palmer. The plot of the movie is so entertaining and touching that I could watch it everyday. This is my favorite movie because it focuses on responsibility and determination, it also shows how one person can not be above everyone else, it takes teamwork. Lastly, the movie shows how a man is to appreciate and treat the lady he loves. Stomp the yard focuses on competing fraternity steppers at fictional Truth University. DJ channels his anger at the system though crunk dancing, and his innovative moves make him a crowd favorite. But when a fight with a rival team leads to his brother Durons murder, DJ feels guilt and despair, which turns, no surprise, into more anger. Shipped off to Atlanta to live with his uncle and aunt, DJ finds new athletic, dance, and competition possibilities in stepping. At Truth, DJ is recruited by two fraternities who think his skills will help them win the national championship. He selects Theta Nu Theta because its leader, the one and only, Ernest Sylvester extols the virtues of brotherhood more than winning the title which of course, everyone focuses on winning. I give full credit to the director, producer and editors of this film. They really kept their brains working when they were coming up with all the ideas composed of the film. Such ideas as stepping, DJs love for April, Grants rivalry with DJ, April fathers grudge against DJs uncle for having stolen his girlfriend back in the day and the Pythons dream to beat The MU Gamma at the National championships. This film is well directed. For instance, when DJ moves to Atlanta and joins The Truth University, he discovers, stepping, the dancing technique which is traditionally done in African-American fraternities. It is here where teams demonstrate their complex moves and create rhythmic sounds by the use of their bodies. For example DJs talent sees him at the peak of hip-hop between rivalry of the two fraternities (Pythons and MU Gamma), the winner of which will be determined in front of a sold-out-arena at the annual championships, nevertheless, DJ has to overcome his own ego and learn the true meaning of brotherhood. The films nature has its audience fully involved. The editing of this movie was done with the highest perspective. Its rhythms are well edited, they are captivating and entertaining. In depth Stomp the Yard demonstrates responsibility and determination that makes this movie so real and interesting. The costumes and make-up directors did a marvelous job. The fact is that the costumes used in the movie were captivating. The costumes added relevance to the motion and main ideas in the film. For example, at the last stage of the movie, The MU Gamma fraternity presented a show that incorporated wolf sounds. This was further enhanced by the fact that the group had worn torn clothes. The use of different costume by the different fraternities brought out their sophistication. The director selected costumes that are widely used by todays generation of dancing artists. This film has a significant impact on its audiences. There are several aspects that have been tackled in the movie. The movie develops and improves on the dancing skill of those interested in dancing. It also urges the individuals (specifically the youth) to fight for what they want through dedication and commitment. For example, DJ has to overcome so many obstacles in order to accomplish the goals he has. The movie also shows the importance of standing by friends and family. This is shown when DJ is taken in by his uncle and also when April stands up to her father in order to defend DJ. April also comforts and encourages DJ when hes just about to quit and she manages to convince him to keep going. Â  Furthermore it portrays the consequences of hatred among individuals. For instance, the hatred that Aprils father has for DJs uncle is immense such that he does not want DJ to be with his daughter. The hatred between DJ and Grant also causes DJs suspension (when grant investigates abou t DJs past and finds that he had a criminal record). For those people that love dance movies, stomp the yard brings new ideas and moves to the screen. The movie unlike other many dance films enhances the importance of uniformity when performing as a crew. It is a truly captivating film that is fun and educative to watch. Heavy-handed and well- intentioned, Stomp the Yard proposes that step groups (and similar organizations) provide structure and inspiration for students in need of guidance and a sense of belonging. Its a decidedly masculine melodrama. Not only does DJ contend with paternal dis approvals (his uncle thinks stepping is a waste of time, and Aprils dad warns him that My daughter is not some shorty for you to mess with!), but he must also come to terms with his own competitive hostility and Durans death. At the same time, he has to come up with a killer step routine for the group. Luckily, DJ is inspired by Truths amazing array of sorority and fraternity alumni, who are enshrined in Heritage Hall, Â  the list includes Esther Rolle, Hines Ward, Michael Jordan, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott King, among others. Â  Stomp the Yard, as its’ predecessors, offers the hope that there is indeed a better life out there to those who wish to grab a hold of it. It provided to me a good feeling when DJ entered Heritage House and paid respect to all the Civil Rights leaders and influential people who paved the way for him to succeed. More movies need to focus on uplifting people rather than portraying their stereotypes and continuing the circle of despair. Yes, its a strained conceit, but Sylvain Whites movie does well to remind all of us of these powerful embodiments of resistance, motivation, and truth.

An Evaluation of the Activities, Reading Books and Watching Movies

An Evaluation of the Activities, Reading Books and Watching Movies Books vs. Movies Which one is better reading a book or watching a movie? People always debate on whether reading a book is better than watching a movie. Movies are just a live action version of a book, but the movies tend to leave out a lot of details one can get from reading the book. Grant it, reading a book takes more time, but a person gets to tap into their imagination more from reading a book than watching a movie. Books are just as great as movies if not better because books have no time limit, give people a better understanding, and they have more detail. Reading a book has no time limit, whereas; movies have a certain time period to get finished in. The books that are made into movies usually do not turn out the way we want them to be. Movies can be ruined by bad actors. The length of the movies determines how much details from the book go into the movie. Sadly, movies are all about the actors more than the details from the book ever were. When reading a book maybe the reader’s imagination was not met when they watched the movie. While reading a book you get a better understanding of the characters thoughts, feelings, and actions because it is written throughout the book itself. Reading a book lets the reader’s imagination flow. When the reader taps into their imagination they can imagine what the book is like visually. One can picture the characters in their head. They can picture what the characters voices sound like. The reader can visualize the scenes and imagine what the places look like according to what they read. People can relate more to a book usually than a movie because books have more detail. Not all the details from reading a book can be pictured in the movies. Typically the movies are worse than the book. Details draw the readers in and the more details they gather the more intrigued they get. When people get intrigued they usually follow what intrigues them. So therefore if they are reading the first book throughout a series it will make them read the other books. When someone picks up a book that they like they tend to find other books that are like the book they read. Reading books are better than movies due to the fact of having no time limit, a better understanding, and way more details. Books draw the reader in more than when a person watches movie. People go watch a movie typically because of actors. Books and movies are both great but books will always last longer. Books have a higher demand than a movie ever will.

Cosmetic Composition Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Cosmetic Composition - Essay Example A brief introduction of some of the frequently used chemicals is given below and their effects on the skin are also discussed. Tretinoin also commonly known as Retin-A is a chemical derived form vitamins and is usually used for the treatment of acne. Later it was discovered that it can also be used for the elimination of small wrinkles. After this discovery, cosmetic companies ritually started including vitamin A in their cosmetics claiming it to be highly beneficial, others disagreed and stated that Retin A actually irritates and puffs up the skin which gives it a smooth wrinkle free look. Secondly fruit acids generally popular as Alpha Hyroxy Acids (AHA) claimed to gently remove the dead skin cells revealing softer and smoother inner layer. Later on studies revealed that AHA’s should not be used very frequently since they can serve to be drugs rather than cosmetic and it was also prohibited since it is very frequently used by non trained beauticians which can bring about ver y serious damages to the skin. The very popularly used exfoliants can also be very damaging and hazardous to the skin since they serve to remove the dead and mature skin cells revealing and exposing the premature skin cells to dust and ultraviolet rays. In the absence of the adult skin cells, the premature ones have a tendency to age and dry out rapidly. (Leslie, 100) Use of Masks and Serums and its Impact on the Beauty Industry The basic concerns of individuals, as far as skin is concerned is aging spots and areas affected by the ultraviolet rays. Skin specialists have been focusing their concentration on these problems so that they can be easily tackled and taken care of. The extract of Magnolia Sieboldii is used to address the problem of photoaging and also for the prevention of wrinkles. Its extract has the ability to protect the skin cells from the sun rays and ensures minimum skin damage by suppressing the damage of the skin cells and DNA. It also contains within itself the pr operty of reducing the wrinkles that appear on the skin with time, it does so by providing growth to the synthesis of collagen simultaneously retarding the growth of collagenases. Hence it is widely used in sunblocks, and also in anti ageing masks and serums. Other natural active ingredients used in cosmetics are alcohol, aloe vera, amino acids, avocado oil, beeswax, cucumber extract etc. Their useful affects on skin cells and body are as discussed. Alcohol is used in a lot of cosmetics for the purpose of skin firming and disinfecting it. Aloe vera is considered to be very effective in treating damaged and dry skin, providing it moisture and a soothing effect. It regenerates the dead and mature skin cells. Beeswax is simply the wax produced by the bees and is known to be effective for the protection and moisture locking in the cells. Avocado is a multipurpose fruit which is used for eating as well as in the cosmetic industry. Its extracts are immediately absorbed by the skin making it supple without a fatty appearance to it. It maintains and revitalizes the working of the lipid barrier making lamellar coverings which give the skin a unitone complexion along with flexibility. (Valerie, 219) Benefits of Cosmetic Composition Cosmetics may have hazardous effects on the skin but if used wisely and in the right proportion can make the skin

Are Zoos Inhumane? Essays -- Animal Cruelty

In the film, Madagascar, zoos are depicted as a sanctuary in which all the exotic animals are kept safe and are open for the public to view. But many would argue that zoos are inhumane, the caging of animals for our personal entertainment is unjustifiable. Those who believe that zoos are wrong and should be destroyed are animal rights activist; they believe that animals should be allowed to choose their own destiny. Those that believe that zoos are an important part of our lives are scientist and zoologist. This debate has gone on for generations and average folk are stuck in the middle, not knowing which side to stand on. The animals being kept in captivity could not be interviewed; their side of the story will be based on interpretation on their movement and interaction with animals in the zoo and in the wild. Are animals better suited to live in the harsh conditions of the wild or are they better suited to live their lives safely in captivity? Many animal rights activist argue that animals should be allowed to live their lives in the wild instead of captivity. That we as humans have no right to neither alter the fate of other species nor use them for our personal benefits. PETA who is well known for their animal rights view argue that â€Å"Captive animals are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them and as a result, they become bored and lonely and many even suffer from a condition called zoochosis.† (PETA 1) Zoochosis is a condition in which the animal wonders back and forth usually in the same position for hours on end. This condition is only seen in the zoos as a result of the animal’s captivity. As a result zoos provide these animals with Prozac, which is a mood-altering drug to help prevent public atte... ... in todays society. But one thing is for sure many would argue that zoos have brought humans and animals closer together for the good and the bad. Works Cited "Zoos." Animal Cruelty -. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 May 2015.
